Stress among students can affect learning in so many ways. Both little or too much stress affects or inhibits effective learning, which is why it has to be addressed, especially for college students.

College life is not all about having fun and enjoyment. It brings in a lot of stress and pressure to students, and even make them prone to depression. In fact, depression is one of the prevalent problems in college students in the US, according to PsychCentral. But the good news is, there is something that students can do about it, and that is by taking a few deep breaths, some meditation and mental exercises.

According to a study published in a recent issue of the Journal of American College Health, mindfulness program can help students get through depression, anxiety and even hangover from excessive alcohol drinking, Market Watch reported. This was proven true among freshman students who participated in an eight-week mindfulness program.

Kamila Dvorakova, one of the authors of the study, said that the mental health of the students are important for their success. And when there are interventions performed based on mindfulness and compassion, they increase the student's ability to do well in college.

In the mindfulness program, certain exercises are involved which helps students be present and in touch with their thoughts. The students who participated in the study were exposed to the so-called "Breathe curriculum" which teaches young adults about mindfulness. This includes teaching students to improve their body awareness and understanding and work with their own thoughts.

This study should provide fresh insights on how college campuses can help their students have a healthier overall experience. They can implement these strategies to ease stress and depression especially among students who are having difficulty transitioning to college.
