Water Polo is dubbed as the oldest team sport in the Olympics. For the record, it has been around since 1900's and this year is yet to be the most competitive tournament ever where countries like Croatia, United States, Italy and Hungary will compete with each other just to grab the gold. Water Polo has two categories - Men and Women in which both categories are expected to be fierce in Rio Olympics 2016

Water Polo Men

As far as history is concerned, majority of teams has been dominating Water Polo sport since its outset in the 1900 Olympics. According to Swimming World Magazine, Hungary was the most competitive in the entire history of Water Polo Men's division. Hungary claimed nine golds, three silvers and three bronze medals from the 25 Olympic tournaments. The most recent ones are in year 2000, 2004 and 2008 where they won three gold medals in a row. The same sources said that it was in 2012 when Hungary faced the most unfortunate events in Water Polo where they never reached the podium. That means the tournament is open for the new nations to grab the medals.

Water Polo Women

On the other hand, United States has made a history in Water Polo Women's division when they became the country that has most medals since 2000 Games in Sydney in which they won two golds, two silvers and one bronze. This time, they are about to defend their gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Water Polo tournament will run from August 6 to August 20 and August 9 to 19 for men and women, respectively.
