For five years straight, MIT is ranked as number one as the top university in the whole world. According to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, MIT earned a perfect 100 score for all categories in regards to its rating.

The QS assesses rankings based on research quality, teaching quality, graduate employment and global diversity of its students and faculty, cites MIT. Quacquarelli Symonds is an organization that focuses on education platforms.

Aside from earning the number one spot, Massachusetts Institute of Technology also earned the top spot when it comes to the 42 disciplines being scored by QS. MIT scored 12 out of 42. MIT's disciplines include engineering and technology, chemical engineering, civil and structural engineering, computer science, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering.

In addition, QS also ranked MIT as the world's top university when it comes to other disciplines. Such as chemistry, architecture, physics, astronomy, linguistics, materials science, economics and statistics.

The private research university, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, follows a European polytechnic university model. Founded in 1861, the research university spans about 168 acres. The school itself has an undergraduate and graduate program. And MIT also promotes athletics.

In its 2014 editions, Money magazine ranks MIT as one of the best colleges in the United States when it comes to "your money." Money assessed MIT as having the "most bang for your tuition buck." Similar to that of QS, Money factored in affordability, career outcome and education quality. Forbes also scored MIT as a high rated university when it comes to business. Forbes ranked MIT as one of the most entrepreneurial universities from the fact that the percentage of alumni and graduates are now identified as business founders or owners on LinkedIn.

Its notable alum includes Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
