'Half-Life 3' Release Date Rumors: Next Installment Likely To Feature Underwater Kraken Base; A JJ Abrams 'Portal' Movie Announcement Is Coming soon? [VIDEO]

The original "Half-Life" is almost two decades old, and while many speculated that that Valve may have left the franchise in the cold, some optimistic fans of the first-person shooter video game series are still hoping that "Half-Life 3" will debut within the next couple of years.

Rumor mills have been swirling speculations around "Half-Life 3" for the past few years hinting that the game's next installment could be in the making; however, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell neither confirmed nor denied these rumors. Moreover, theories about the game's plot have been making rounds online alluding to the imminent project.

If the recently surfaced rumors are anything to go by, "Half-Life 3" will boast a new Kraken Base, and it is also speculated that the inclusion of this in the game will bring in an all-new gaming experience for avid gamers. Rampant rumors also suggest that players will be able to delve into the deep waters of the ocean using a submarine since the Kraken Base is underwater, Neurogadget reported. But the fun doesn't stop there!

Another notable feature that is expected to be included in "Half-Life 3" is support for VR (virtual reality). This speculation stems from the fact that game developer recently collaborated with HTC to release a VR headset dubbed HTC Vive.

Although Newell has remained mum about "Half-Life 3" rumors, fans continue to hazard guesses that the upcoming project will hit the store shelves sometime in 2018. This rumor was spurred by the fact that the game franchise will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on November 8, 2018 i.e. exactly 20 years since the release of the first "Half-Life" title.

While it still remains to be seen if Valve chooses to take the wraps off the new title on November 2018, J.J. Abrams has confirmed that the "Portal" and "Half Life" movies are in the works, and fans can look forward to a Portal announcement in near future.

While speaking to IGN on the Westworld red carpet, the filmmaker said both projects are currently in development. The "Star Trek" director noted that they have a meeting scheduled for next week with Valve. However, he remained tight-lipped when asked if fans can expect the movie to follow on from the existing story-lines in the games.

J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell teased "Half-Life" and "Portal" film projects during the annual DICE Summit in Las Vegas back in 2013.
