SAN ANTONIO — Just as final exams begin and students brace for one of the most stressful weeks of the semester, a cybersecurity breach tied to the Canvas learning platform has disrupted colleges and universities across the country.
At the University of Incarnate Word, students and faculty were among those affected. The University of Texas at San Antonio and the Alamo Colleges District also said they were dealing with the fallout, adding to the uncertainty on campuses already under pressure from end-of-semester deadlines.
Canvas is the digital backbone for many schools, handling class materials, grades, assignments and lecture content. When the system went down or became unreliable, the disruption was felt quickly by students trying to finish papers, submit work and prepare for exams.
The timing made the breach especially difficult. Final exams are often when every minute matters, and even a short outage can throw off study plans, grading schedules and class communication. For many students, the platform is more than a convenience — it is the central hub for the academic day.
Some schools reported seeing a ransom note on their Canvas homepages, according to CNN reporting. A hacking group calling itself ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the attack and demanded payment to stop further data leaks.
Instructure, the company that runs Canvas, said Thursday afternoon that the platform was in maintenance mode while it investigated the issue. UIW said Instructure had not given a timeline for a fix.
At UTSA, officials said assignments and exams due on or before Friday are being rescheduled. UIW said it extended deadlines for affected finals and grade submissions. Even with the disruption, both UTSA and UIW said Saturday commencement ceremonies would go on as planned.
For students, the incident is a reminder of how much higher education depends on digital systems that can fail at the worst possible time. In the middle of finals week, that dependence has turned into a test of patience as much as preparation.
