There are a lot of colleges in the United States that excel in academics as well as research and innovation. This has been a great year for Stanford University which has been deemed as one of the best universities in the United States.

Stanford has recently topped Reuters' list of the World's Most Innovative Universities. The school has recently nabbed the top spot in The Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education's college rankings list.

It also topped College Factual's top California Colleges list. It is followed by Harvey Mudd College, which is based in Claremont. The California Institute of Technology (CalTech) took the third place in the list.

However, Stanford was overtaken by an Ivy League institution as the college which has the most Nobel laureates this century. Times Higher Education reported that Princeton University has produced the most number of Nobel Prize winners.

Aside from Stanford, Princeton also overtook Columbia University and the University of California - Berkeley. Harvard University also joined the top 10 list, in eighth place. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology nabbed the fifth spot.

U.S. universities got the top spots in THE's report. Technion Israel Institute of Technology was the only university outside of the United States to make it to the top 10, in 10th place. It is followed by Germany's Max Planck Society, in 11th place.

It was also noted that no universities from the U.K. made it to the top 10. The University of Manchester and the University of Cambridge both tied at 14th place. This is the same position that they had last year. Each institution got one Nobel Prize this century.

The University of Oxford, which recently revealed its sample interview questions to "demystify" the application process, did not have any Nobel Prize winner this century. Other universities in the list are the University of Chicago, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of California - Santa Barbara.
