Looks like "Destiny" fans are in for a very long wait as "Destiny 2," the much-awaited sequel to the popular first-person shooter "Destiny" will not debut this year.

"Destiny 2," the second installment to the popular online-only video game was originally scheduled to be released this year, however it was dropped in order to pave the way for a new "Destiny" expansion slated to be released later this year. Besides, "Destiny 2" was going through a reboot in the midst of staff restructuring at Bungie, and this further delayed the release.

Bungie's staff reorganization that included getting a new director, was part of a major organizational overhaul the studio underwent. "Taken King" director, Luke Smith is now at the helm as far as "Destiny 2" is concerned, Kotaku reported earlier this month.

Activision CFO Dennis Durkin earlier confirmed that a new expansion slated to debut this year, is already in the works, however a full game "Destiny" will not be released this year. Durkin also added that the highly-anticipated sequel to "Destiny," dubbed "Destiny 2," will now come in 2017.

In fact, just last year, it was divulged that "Destiny 2" was initially scheduled to release in September 2015, which imply the sequel may have actually been delayed not by one, but two years. The expansion Durkin allude to has now been divulged to be "Rise of Iron."

Although, speculations hint a June release date for the new downloaded content (DLC), both Bungie and Activision have remained mum and have not announced an official release date. If rumors doing rounds proved true, the DLC could make an appearance at E3 2016, and become available in September, Video Gamer reported

Activision Publishing executive Eric Hirschberg cited the new content and enhancements to the first-person shooter to get players back to the game, but clearly, fans are anticipating more than what the studio has been able to create.

For now, it seems confirmed that Bungie and Activision will take the wraps off "Destiny 2" sometime in 2017.
