The Stanford University has topped the list of Forbes' entrepreneurial universities in the United States.

Even though some of their students quit midway through their college, they went on to establish some of the world's most successful companies. Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Yahoo's Jerry Yang and David Filo and Snapchat's Evan Spiegel are some of the school's famous dropouts.

Page and Brin became good friends at Stanford while acquiring their respective PhD's. They used to spend hours together in their dormitory rooms to build a superior search engine using Brin's data mining system. They later discontinued their PhD studies to establish Google in a rented garage.

Forbes ranking is based on the percentage of alumni and students who have identified themselves as founders and business owners on LinkedIn against the school's total student population.

Stanford is followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The school's student-run $100K Entrepreneurship Competition that has helped create over 130 companies and 2,500 jobs is one of the largest and most famous business plan contests in the world.

In 2013, 3dim was crowned the winner of $100K Entrepreneurship Competition for their business plan of merging two of today's most popular technological phenomena: gesture-recognition and smart devices. The proposed technology would allow users to interact with their devices through thin air, rather than having to touch a screen.

"What is the next interface [for mobile devices]? ... The answer is gesture recognition," co-founder Andrea Colaco, a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab, said in a statement. "Every mobile-device manufacturer is scrambling to bring gesture-recognition into their devices. This is an immediate and unaddressed market."
