Kirkland Signature Sliced Fruit Recalled From Costco Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination

By

An Oregon-based company issued a voluntary recall of nearly 60,000 cases of Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit produced exclusively for Costco Wholesale Stores due to possible salmonella contamination, Food Safety News reported.

Freeze-dried fruit maker Oregon Freeze Dry said the affected products are marked with a Feb. 14, 2015 to March 11, 2015 "best by" due date. The recall involves 59,780 cases, which each contain 20 single-serving pouches of dried fruits such as apples, strawberries and bananas, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.

Precautionary recall measures began on March 8. Consumers who may have purchased the product were contacted by phone and U.S. mail, and a letter regarding the voluntary recall was posted on the Costco website. The affected product was also removed from Costco stores, according to FDA officials.

Consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts four to seven days.

No illnesses have been reported, but due to the time required to trace an illness back to a specific food product, it is impossible to say if any illnesses have occurred.

Any Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit currently available for purchase has been tested and is safe for consumption. No other products made by Oregon Freeze Dry Inc. are affected.
