The latest AI cybersecurity concern is not hypothetical. Experts told Education Week that artificial intelligence is making cyber attacks more precise and more believable. Emails that once contained obvious warning signs can now sound entirely authentic, as if they came from someone inside the school.
'AI is billed as something that's going to save us time. It's going to be an assistant for us,' Don Ringelestein, executive director for technology at Yorkville 115, put it plainly. 'Well, that same thing applies to hackers. It's going make their jobs easier.'
Security experts say this changes the scale of the threat. Generative AI can quickly analyse school websites, newsletters and social media to identify staff names, roles and routines. It can then use that information to craft targeted attacks in minutes.
When breaches happen, the consequences are not simple. They affect real families. Safeguarding reports, personal records and special education details can all be exposed. Even after systems are repaired, rebuilding trust can take far longer.
This concern also highlights fear for a widening gap about inequality. Schools with better funding can invest in stronger cybersecurity systems. While others are left struggling to defend themselves with outdated infrastructure.
A Promise of a Learning Revolution
Despite the increasing risks, artificial intelligence is not seen only as a threat. Many educators and technology leaders believe it could genuinely improve how students learn at their own pace.
Writing in Fortune, Jose Manuel Barroso and Stephen Hodges of Efekta Education Group argued that AI should be viewed as a support for teachers, not a replacement. They said it could take over routine administrative work, help tailor lessons to individual students and expand access to quality learning materials.
However, they also made clear that this will not happen automatically. This vision depends on coordination between governments, tech firms and educators.
Policymakers need to set clear policies, balancing innovation with child protection. Technology companies must design tools responsibly. And schools need time to understand what they are introducing into classrooms. Without shared standards, they risk rushing into systems they do not fully recognize.
Right now, many teachers say they are still waiting for clear guidance. The pressure to adopt new tools is growing, but the rules around their safe use are still evolving.
Is Education Technology Worth the Cost?
Just like artificial intelligence, not everyone is convinced that education technology delivers on its promises. A letter published in The Economist questioned whether years of investment in EdTech have made as much difference as expected. The writer argued that the results have often been uneven, despite the money spent in digital investment over the years.
That scepticism adds fuel to the never-ending debate. If earlier technological tools did not transform education and learning, why should schools trust a new wave powered by artificial intelligence? Or why AI should be different?
Supporters say the answer lies in accountability and how it is introduced. They argue that evidence-based AI systems need proper testing, transparency and oversight, stressing these lessons are learned from past mistakes.
For now, however, the risks are immediate. Cybersecurity specialists warn that every new AI tool connected to a school system creates another possible entry point for attackers. Each login, each database and each integration adds complexity and creates another point of entry.
The challenge is not to halt or reject technological innovation. It is to slow down enough to protect children while embracing genuine progress. While artificial intelligence could usher in a powerful era of learning, it could also deepen digital harm if leaders fail to act together.
For schools, the question is simple and urgent. Can they harness AI without putting students in danger?
