Nearly two decades after the killing of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, authorities say they have yet to solve the case, UPI reported.

Seventeen years ago, John and Patsy Ramsey awoke the day after Christmas to find their beauty pageant queen daughter missing and a ransom note saying she had been kidnapped. Hour later, the JonBenet's body was found in the basement room of her parent's Boulder, Colo., home, UPI reported.

No one has been arrested in her murder.

The Boulder Police Department released a statement two months ago saying the case is currently considered cold and prosecution is unlikely.

"The case is still open, but is not actively being investigated and there are no new leads," it said. "While we believe at this point it is unlikely there will ever be a prosecution, the Boulder Police Department still holds out some hope that one day the district attorney and the Boulder Police Department will be able to put together a case worthy of presenting to a jury."

It was revealed in October that a grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy on charges of child abuse resulting in death and accessory to a crime in 1999. However, the charges were later tossed by then-District Attorney Alex Hunter because "he didn't think he could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the parents were guilty," UPI reported.

In their statement, the Boulder Police Department said investigators were disappointed when the DA decided not to bring charges and that "as a result, the opportunity to present the entire case to a jury may be lost forever."
