OnePlus 3 Gets 7-8 Hours Screen-On Time With Kernel Tweaks; Method Works On Snapdragon 820 SoC Phones [VIDEO]

By

The OnePlus 3 kernel tweaks deliver seven to eight hours of screen-on time and even as much as 14 hours or more with a few compromises. The tweaks on prolonging battery life were possible via the Advance Interactive Governor that could work with any phone that has Snapdragon 820 chipset as claimed by XDA forum users.

OnePlus has boasted of its Dash Charge technology as far more advanced than existing quick charge technology. This was an important feature in its current flagship device, the OnePlus 3 with its 3000mAh battery capacity, which can give a full day with heavy usage or two days with moderate usage. Incidentally, the same Dash Charge technology will also be featured in the newest iteration, the coming OnePlus 5.

Smartphone manufacturers know that battery peak performance is an important come-on feature to potential buyers. OnePlus 3 owners may have more reason to hold on to their mid-range phone as new kernel tweaks further prolong its battery life.

XDA forum users like @asiler, @patalao, @mostafa and @senthil360 have revealed to have found a way to tweak the kernels of the Snapdragon 820 SoC in the OnePlus 3. This result to eight hours screen-on time with no compromises or changes in the way users used their phones. There is also a noticeable improvement on performance that now runs "buttery smooth and lag-free" according to Android Authority.

The XDA thread reveals that the optimized battery is achieved with the usual, no-compromise usage with daytime visible screen brightness, radios on, Wi-Fi on, sync on and many of the normal tasks required in a phone. Moreover, 14 plus hours may also be achieved for users who will settle with minimal brightness, Wi-Fi only and other features disabled, Softpedia has learned.

The kernel tweaks were done using the Advance Interactive Governor where every kernel is tweaked and modified. Users may only need to download a profile for the Governor, which will automatically tweak the Snapdragon 820 SoC. More importantly, the phone must be rooted with an Ex Kernel manager app to apply the profile.

The methodology that was specifically tested for the OnePlus 3 is supposedly applicable to any phone with Snapdragon 820. The XDA community may soon come up with other kernel tweaks for each kind of phone with the same chipset.
