Three Georgia Institute of Technology researchers are getting million dollar grants for being young investigators. They are three out of the 33 young scientists around the country that received the grant from the Office of Naval Research, United States Navy.

The Arlington, Virgina-based agency explains that there were over a hundred researchers that applied for the grants. The three Georgia Institute of Technology researchers are:

Dr. Dhruv Batra from Georgia Tech

Batra has a Ph.D. and M.S. from Carnegie Mellon University and received his B.Tech in Electronics Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanas. His area of expertise is on machine learning, computer vision, and AI, with a focus on developing intelligent systems. His research is on Explainable and Trustworthy Intelligent Systems.

Dr. Josh Kacher from Georgia Tech

Kacher has a PhD and Masters on multiscale electron microscopy techniques to understand defect behaviors in a variety of systems such as ion-irradiated stainless steels, materials at elevated temperatures, and Mg alloys for light-weight alloy development. His research is on Correlating Microstructure to Corrosion Susceptibility using a Multiscale Electron Microscopy Approach, as reported by the Office of Naval Research, Science and Technology.

Dr. Wenshan Cai from Georgia Tech

Cai received his Bachelor of Science and Masteral degrees from Tsinghua University. He has a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 2008, all in electrical/electronic engineering. His area of expertise is on nanophotonic materials and devices,where he has made a major impact on the evolving field of plasmonics and metamaterials. He has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals on the subjects. His research is on Hot-Carrier-Induced Nonlinear Optical Processes in Photonic Metamaterials.

Typically, the Office of Naval Research typically grants $510,000 over three years to hundreds of researchers, as reported by WRCBtv.
