In order to give light on the issue with LG's UltraFine 5K Display being compatible with Macs, Apple released support documents this week, stating how LG's new display can be used on older Mac units.

As noted in Apple's Support Pages document, the LG 5K display can be experienced with the latest 2016 MacBook. The said computers also include the 15-inch MacBook Pro, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro with no Touch Bar, Apple Insider reported.

However, the full 5120×2880 5K resolution display can be used at 4K resolution with older iMac, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini models, using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and a Thunderbolt cable.

With the requirement on Apple hardware compatibility currently available at the recently released MacBook Pro models, customers with older Macs are put into a burden of purchasing a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and a Thunderbolt cable of their choosing.

To guide Mac users on the laptops that require Apple's Thunderbolt adapter solution, the support document revealed the following:

3840 x 2160 at 60Hz

- Mac Pro (Late 2013)

- MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and later

- MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2014) and later

- iMac (Retina, 27-inch, Late 2014) and later

- iMac (Retina, 21.5-inch, Late 2015)

- iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2015)

- MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)

- MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015)

3200 x 1800 at 60Hz

- Mac mini (Late 2014)

Mac Rumors reported that Apple included a footnote about the headless Mac Pro and Mac Mini, recommending users to administer a secondary monitor to experience the UltraFine 5K, as the Thunderbolt connection will not operate until after logging into macOS.

Last October, LG's UltraFine 5K Display was released in partnership with Apple to accompany the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar models.

As per Apple's online store, the LG UltraFine 5K is pegged at a price of $975, and will be estimated to deliver in 3-4 working days to 2-4 weeks due to the delay in launching the monitor. The Thunderbolt adapter costs $29 instead of $49, while the Thunderbolt cable enjoys no discount at $39.
