There are a multitude of anime that has come out over the years. Some became so popular that they are now considered classics and masterpieces that set milestones in the history of anime. Some have stunning visuals, others have complex characters, some have a combination of both.

Astro Boy

Astro Boy could be the most popular. It follows the story of a sentient android. The classic Osamu Tezuka anime is the cartoon of children all over the world. In 2009, Toby was once again immortalized through an American CG adaptation.

Mobile Suit Gundam

One of the earlier sci-fi anime series that featured giant robots piloted by a soldier. A failure in its initial outing, the series picked up fast in the '80s that also boosted toy sales. Countless sequels and spin-offs of the series ensued marking the rise of the mecha genre in anime.

Lupin the 3rd

Who could forget this action/comedy that to this day is still the best adventure comedy in the history of anime. Needless to say, the master thief has had a range of influence on films, TV shows and various other productions.

Dragon Ball

Son Goku is probably one of the best known warriors in the world of anime. The anime has covered a generation from the time he was just a boy. The series was initially centered around seven Dragon Balls but shifted to martial arts. The series is still popular to this day.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

To create, something of equal value must be lost, words that govern the law of alchemy. The story follows the adventure of two brothers who break the rules of transmutation in the attempt to bring someone back from the dead. Not only is the characters well developed but the world they move in is developed as well, reported Buzzfeed.

Ruroini Kenshin: Meiji Kenkau Romantan

The historical samurai genre followers should know about this one. Its popularity spurned live action movies that had good following the same as the anime. The classic is also known as Samurai X in English.

Pokémon

Pokémon did not start the way other popular anime did. Pokémon began as a simple video game the "evolved" into the classic anime we have come to love. The plot revolves around fictional creatures called Pokémon and people who train them for battle. The series made the games more popular and it also spawned several movies with no signs of slowing down just yet.
