The University of Utah has approved plans to build a new medical campus at "The Point," a 600-acre innovation community being developed on state-owned land in Draper.
The university's Board of Trustees voted this week to authorize a land purchase agreement with The Point's governing board, clearing the way for a roughly 45- to 46-acre health campus at the site.
The Point's board also approved the agreement, which designates University of Utah Health as the exclusive health care provider for the emerging mixed-use community along the fast-growing south Salt Lake Valley corridor, according to The Point Utah.
Plans call for an initial 200,000-square-foot facility that university leaders describe as the foundation of a full-scale hospital and medical campus. The project is expected to expand over time to include inpatient hospital services, outpatient specialty clinics, and other medical programs aligned with the university's regional health mission.
The Point, located on the former Utah State Prison site, is being developed as Utah's "Innovation Community," with housing, offices, research space, retail, entertainment, and extensive open space centered around transit connections and a "River-to-Range" trail system.
Planners envision a highly walkable district where residents, workers, and visitors can access jobs, services, and recreation within a 15-minute walk, and the new medical campus is intended to anchor health services within that model, KSL reported.
University officials say the project will expand access to advanced care for rapidly growing communities in southern Salt Lake County while supporting medical education, research, and workforce development.
The campus is expected to complement the University of Utah Health's existing network of hospitals and clinics, including a new 800,000-square-foot hospital and medical campus now planned for West Valley City.
Financial details of the land purchase have not yet been publicly disclosed, but university leaders have indicated that the project will rely on a mix of institutional investment, philanthropic support, and future clinical revenue.
State leaders have promoted The Point as a long-term economic engine, and the medical campus is expected to play a central role in bringing health-related jobs, training opportunities, and specialized care to the site, as per Arch Daily.
