TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In an unprecedented moment for the University of Alabama, President Donald J. Trump will deliver the keynote commencement address for the Class of 2025, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president has spoken at the university's graduation ceremony. Trump announced the event late Monday night on his Truth Social platform, generating widespread buzz among students, alumni, and political figures.
"I have agreed to do the Commencement Address at two really GREAT places, the University of Alabama and, WEST POINT. Stay tuned for times and dates!!!" Trump posted on Truth Social, igniting excitement and anticipation. The University of Alabama's spring commencement ceremonies are scheduled for May 2–4 at Coleman Coliseum, with Trump's address set as a ticketed event on Thursday, May 1, separate from the college-specific ceremonies.
The announcement has drawn strong support from Alabama's Republican leadership. U.S. Senator Katie Britt, a University of Alabama alumna, described the event as "a tremendous honor for my alma mater and a historic occasion for graduates and their families." Governor Kay Ivey, despite her Auburn University allegiance, added, "It truly will be a historic occasion for these UA graduates and their families. What an incredible opportunity to hear from the President of the United States!"
Hosting a sitting president is a landmark moment for the University of Alabama's nearly 200-year history. "We look forward to celebrating our graduates throughout commencement weekend as we confer degrees to thousands of hardworking students who will go on to make a positive impact," the university stated, emphasizing that campus logistics and security are being meticulously planned.
Trump is no stranger to Tuscaloosa, having attended high-profile Alabama football games, including the Alabama-Georgia matchup in September 2024 and the 2019 LSU-Alabama game during his first term. His ties to the state were further solidified in 2015 when former Senator Jeff Sessions joined him at a rally at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
The university will release ticketing and event details soon, ensuring all 2025 graduates can attend this historic address. As Tuscaloosa prepares to welcome the 47th President, the University of Alabama's commencement weekend promises to be a defining moment for the Class of 2025.
