Marshall Henderson Suspended From Ole Miss Basketball Team 3 Games; Will Miss Troy, Auburn and Miss. St. Games
ByThe Ole Miss Rebels basketball team will be without their leading scorer from last year for three games.
For violating team rules, Ole Miss has determined senior guard Marshall Henderson will be suspended for three regular season games, ESPN reported. However, Henderson will sit the season opener against Troy and then miss the team's first two games against SEC opponents - Auburn on Jan. 9 and Mississippi State on Jan. 11.
Henderson's suspension was announced in July shortly following a police citation for possessing small amounts of marijuana and cocaine. He ended up with a ticket for not having insurance, but the school still suspended him for a violation of team rules.
The suspension also entails the negative attention he received for his behavior during the NCAA tournament. He made an "inappropriate gesture" after his team lost to La Salle and was eliminated from the tournament.
"I want to thank Coach [Andy] Kennedy, [athletic director] Ross Bjork and the university for giving me an opportunity to rejoin the team. This has been a difficult time for me, and I appreciate this chance," Henderson said in a statement released by the school. "My teammates and I are looking forward to defending our SEC championship.''
Those incidents are only the most recent in a long line of off-court issues for Henderson. He has had disputes online with TV reporter Erin Andrews, as well as failing numerous drug tests. Ole Miss is also the fourth school in Henderson's college basketball career.
Despite his past, Kennedy has said that, during pre-season team activities, Henderson has emerged as a leader on the team.
"I support this decision, and I am thankful to our leadership for allowing Marshall the opportunity to earn the right to rejoin our team,'' Kennedy said in a statement. "Marshall has been compliant with the process put in place for him since his suspension in early July, and we look forward to him being back on our team."
