Authorities announced Thursday the discovery of skeletal remains that could belong to Adrienne Salinas, a Tempe, Ariz. student from Gateway Community College missing since June 15, USA Today reported.

A property owner in Apache Junction found the remains on Aug. 6. near Highway 88 and Lost Dutchman Boulevard. The FBI, Tempe and Apache Junction police have been working together since to comb the area for further evidence. The investigation was kept private until more was known.

The body could have washed up where it did due to significant flooding on July 21. Investigators could not determine if the body was that of Salinas, but said it matched the frame was a match.

"We don't know where the body came from," said Sgt. Mike Pooley, a spokesman for the Tempe Police Department.

More than 100 volunteers and authorities are searching a six-mile area, alerting homeowners whose property needed to be searched. Authorities are concerned evidence could have been washed away by the flooding.

The remains were sent to Pima County's medical examiner, but the DNA results will take about a week.

The last time anyone saw or heard from Salinas was early the morning of June 15 when she was waiting for a cab. She had repeatedly called her boyfriend and texted him at 4:43 a.m., saying, "I'm coming over."

She had attended a party with her boyfriend the night before and had been drinking. At the party, Salinas and the boyfriend got into an argument, so he took her to his place. They continued to argue, so he took her home.

Her roommates told authorities Salinas had packed an overnight bag and told them she was driving to her boyfriend's home in Scottsdale. A witness claimed to see her car hit a median, but when Salinas' father Rick found the car, there were two flat tires and no one in it.

At 5:05 a.m., she called a cab, but the cab driver could not find her when he arrived. Her cell phone was discovered to have been turned off at 5:07 a.m. The boyfriend said she never arrived. He is not considered a suspect and has been cooperative throughout the investigation.
