Virginia Tech (VT) running back Michael Holmes was dismissed from the school by a student judicial board's decision a month ago, reported the Washington Post.

"He is permanently separated from the university," athletic director Jim Weaver said in a statement.

Holmes was arrested for a fight on April 21, following the VT Hokies' spring football game, and initially was charged with a felony for malicious wounding. He agreed to plead guilty to a lesser misdemeanor assault and battery charge.

Weaver had been planning discuss Holmes' reinstatement with head football coach Frank Beamer when the student judicial board made their decision. He did not say whether or not he agreed with the ruling. Holmes may appeal the decision in writing if he choses to.

"It doesn't happen very often. I can think of maybe two other cases since the time I've been here," said Weaver, who arrived at VT in 1997.

Following his guilty plea, Holmes was sentenced to a 12-month suspended jail sentence, one year of probation and ordered to pay $13,403 in restitution.

Holmes was arrested only a few hours after the Hokies' spring football game on April 21 for his involvement in a fight that started between his current girlfriend, Karoline Seekford, and his ex-girlfriend, Ciara Simms. The altercation took place around two a.m. in a campus parking lot.

Kierra Barnes, one of the victims of the fight, is suing Holmes for $25,000 and said he punched her in the face and now she needs nose surgery. Holmes' guilty plea stems from his altercation with Barnes' cousin, Antoine.

Following the plea, Holmes said he wished to be reinstated by the football team, from which he was suspended indefinitely following the arrest.

"I definitely want to be back on the team," Holmes told the News and Advance in June. "If not, I'll have to move on to what's next."

While he can appeal the student judicial board's decision, he would still need to be reinstated by Weaver.

"I don't know (if I would have reinstated him). I would have had to review the case and go from there," Weaver said. "Just because somebody has a felony reduced to a misdemeanor, it's not automatic that I'm going to reinstate them."

Holmes ran for 280 yards and four touchdowns in five games started last year and was expected to compete for the starting job this year. He reportedly has drawn interest from James Madison University, which has scholarship money available. A transfer would have to be approved by the VT's president and athletic director.
