The Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) decided to delay their vote on an early signing period in college football until this time next year.

The 10 commissioners of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) were in Asheville, N.C. to vote on the proposal, but instead tabled it for next year's meetings. In the meantime, ESPN reported, the CCA will defer to the NCAA's newly former football oversight committee for further examination on the implications of an early signing period.

Jon Steinbrecher, commissioner of the Mid-American Conference, chaired the group that proposed an early signing period be established in mid-Dec. for any high school football players ready to go forward with their verbal commitment. He told ESPN there was plenty of support for the proposal, but the CAA ultimately wanted more time to affirm their thoughts.

"There was support in the room to move forward," he said. "I think we all took a collective deep breath, took a step back and said, 'Would we be wise to try and do this from a bigger picture type of thing, as opposed to a piecemeal one bit at a time?' There was recognition to sync up this issue with other recruiting related issues that will be examined by the football oversight committee."

Bob Bowlsby, Big 12 commissioner and oversight committee chair, was among those who favored tabling the early signing period vote.

"It is appropriate the CCA take a step back in an effort to bring a comprehensive approach to the football issues currently under review," he told ESPN.

While some may have favored taking some extra time to consider the proposal, there still seems to be plenty of people within college football that still think it is a good idea.

"I'm for it because this is about relationships," Ball State head football coach Pete Lembo told USA Today. "And when we offer a young man a scholarship and if that young man accepts, as far as I'm concerned we're married. This isn't a four- or five-year decision, it's a 40- or 50-year decision that's going to impact the rest of someone's life.

"By having an early signing date, let's just say it was the first Wednesday in August. If you're not comfortable making a decision at that point? Don't make it. And if we're not comfortable extending an early offer to somebody and the answer could be 'yes,' then don't make it."
