The excitement for "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" has become more palpable after casting "Stranger Things" breakout star Millie Bobby Brown in the lead role. The young actress' character, however, will take a step back from Kyle Chandler's.

The actor was recently announced as the father of Brown's character in the movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chandler will portray a scientist that will presumably make him as the film's hero. Other plot details are yet to be revealed.

Sources claimed that Chandler turned down multiple offers from several movies, but said yes to the film with a seven-figure contract. Michael Dougherty will direct the sequel from a script penned by him and Zach Shields.

The first movie in the franchise (released in 2014) was helmed by Gareth Edwards and generated $529.1 million revenue worldwide. That film starred Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe.

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and Jordan Vogt-Roberts' "Kong: Skull Island" (coming out on March 10) both exist in the same cinematic universe and will culminate in the crossover movie, "Godzilla vs. Kong," in 2020.

The movies will be connected by the covert scientific organization named Monarch, a group studying the huge animals. Conrad, Tom Hiddleston's character in "Kong: Skull Island," is a tracker and former British Special Air Service soldier who will lend his assistance to the Skull Island expedition crew in the 1970s - a time when the Vietnam War was just dwindling down.

In the process, Conrad will cross paths with "a team of Monarch operatives," who will be "a shadowy presence in the movie, who sort of jumpstart this expedition," Cinema Blend reported. Producer Alex Garcia added that John Goodman's character, Bill Randa (one of the big guys at Monarch), is "sort of pulling the strings in the background," suggesting that the group is withholding vital information.

Bear in mind, however, that Godzilla is still not in the modern world during the events of "Kong: Skull Island," so it will mostly focus on the gigantic primate.

Some viewers are skeptical over the creatures' sizes; Godzilla seems to be larger than Kong and it wouldn't be a fair fight for the latter. Legendary's heads, however, are confident that they can explain how the monsters "can do battle - and possibly become allies," THR reported.

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is slated for a March 22, 2019 release date in theaters. "Godzilla vs. Kong" is coming out on May 29, 2020.
