One of the things that sets a college or a university apart from the rest is their selectivity. These institutions are being judged based on their admission rate, and these selective schools are being selective because of many reasons -they are looking for a very specialized type of applicant, or they are looking for those who have excellent overall credentials.

But whatever the case may be, these schools have a strong name recognition which makes them more attractive to a huge number of applicants, especially now that college admissions rate are becoming more and more competitive. In fact, according to US News, National Association for College Admission Counseling's State of College Admission report states that acceptance rate decreased by six percent over the past decade.

And while many colleges still accept or admit majority of the applicants, there are some institutions that only accept a tiny percentage of their applicants because of being highly selective, and here are those colleges and universities with very tough and competitive admissions, according to Chron.

California Institute of Technology - Pasadena, California

Acceptance rate of this school is only 6 percent, where 75 percent of their enrolled students had lower than 1600 score on SAT and 35 on ACT.

Harvard University - Cambridge, Massachusetts

Yale University - New Haven, Connecticut

Acceptance rate of this school is only 6.3 percent, where 75 percent of their enrolled students had lower than 1600 score on SAT and 35 on ACT.

University of Chicago - Chicago, Illinois

Acceptance rate of this school is only 8 percent, where 75 percent of their enrolled students had lower than 1600 score on SAT and 35 on ACT.

Princeton University - Princeton, New Jersey

Acceptance rate of this school is only 7.4 percent, where 75 percent of their enrolled students had lower than 1600 score on SAT and 35 on ACT.
