"Girl Meets World" is officially saying goodbye from Disney Channel this month. Despite persistent social media calls from fans, the network decided to axe the show after only three seasons.

The two-part series finale of "Girl Meets World" titled "Girl Meets Goodbye" will air on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6/5c, TVLine reported. Last week's episode revealed that the Matthews family may leave for London due to Topanga's (Danielle Fishel) job promotion. Of course, this means Riley (Rowan Blanchard) could be leaving her best friend, Maya (Sabrina Carpenter), and all their friends behind.

While his wife is contemplating about whether or not she should accept the job, Cory (Ben Savage) gathers Riley and her pals and asks them to recall their lives' largest landmarks. The "Girl Meets World" series finale is no doubt going to be emotional -- not just for fans but for the characters they have come to love over the years. The series finale will also serve as the show's reunion with the cast of "Boy Meets World."

The show's cancellation was blamed partly on the network it is airing on. According to Deadline, "Girl Meets World" and Disney may not fit perfectly because of the latter's young audience. Themes intended for children hindered the show from tackling issues that young adults and teens grapple with, and probably made the show resonate less than "Boy Meets World."

There's still a possibility that the series finale isn't the last hurrah of "Girl Meets World." Series creator Michael Jacobs revealed to TVLine that "there are talks underway" for the coming-of-age program to continue airing on another network or streaming service. Those talks, however, are at the "very beginning stages" and it's going to take a while before they arrive at a final decision.

"Girl Meets World" could continue on streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, following the footsteps of TV shows that fans can't and wouldn't let go of just yet, Bustle pointed out. Netflix picked up "Arrested Development" and "Longmire" after they got canceled after Season 4 and Season 3, respectively.

ABC's "Nashville," meanwhile, ended after four seasons but was saved by CMT. Fox's "The Mindy Project" waved goodbye after Season 3 but got a second life on Hulu, and is now on its way to Season 5. "Community" was also canceled after five seasons but continued on Yahoo! Screen after fans clamored for #6SeasonsAndAMovie. With these bright possibilities, "Girl Meets World" fans have started using the hashtags #GirlMeetsNetflix, #SaveGMW and #GirlMeetsHulu on Twitter to demand attention for the show.
