Panasonic in an announcement last week said it has developed a new model of its IPS liquid crystal display panel that delivers a contrast ratio 600 times that of existing LCD panels.

Panasonic claims its new LCD delivers a contrast ratio of over 1,000,000:1 with its unique IPS[2] liquid crystal technology. The 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio of the new Panasonic LCD panel is claimed to be on par with OLED panels, HDGuru reported.

The new Panasonic LCD would also feature wider viewing angles, high brightness, and high reliability with the integration of newly developed light modulating cells, according to Panasonic. The effect is said to be images that range from dazzling light to really pitch black comparable to OLED displays.

In a statement, Panasonic said that their new high-contrast IPS panel solves problems inherent with conventional LCD panels such as black floating and white washout phenomenon. With the development of light-modulating cells and integrating it to the display, the amount of backlight coming into the display cells are controlled down to each individual pixel allowing it to reach the 1,000,000:1 contrast level for new Panasonic LCD panels.

Aside from the new Panasonic LCD having a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, is said to be capable of operating at a stable maximum brightness of 1,000cd/m² and can be manufactured using existing LCD manufacturing facilities.

However, Panasonic announced in May this year their exit in the television screen manufacturing business due to its unprofitability, Reuters reported. Panasonic, therefore, is setting its sights for industry professionals to employ their new IPS LCD panels as HDR monitors, broadcast, and video production studios, medical, automotive, and other fields in need of high-resolution LCD displays.

Panasonic announced they will be shipping samples of the LCD displays beginning January 2017. Chances are there will be further announcements regarding the Panasonic LCD at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next year.
