"Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 was announced earlier this week and sources indicated that Madhouse will be taking over the animation from Studio Pierrot. Also, Touka Kirishima will be given the spotlight she missed in the previous season, in that her continuing struggle with college applications will be given a darker treatment.

An unnamed writer stated that season 3 is perhaps the most disillusioning, psychological and darkest plot line that they have attempted to adapt. He goes on to say that they hope to remain as faithful as possible to the source material, although they cannot guarantee that more gory scenes such as Touka's efforts with standardized exams will not be censored, Anime Maru reported.

Anime Maru reported to have received an exclusive advanced copy of season 3, episode 1. They went on to detail the events where Touka lamented how stressful having to choose between Kamii University, To-Oh University and Duke University is in a monologue. Also, racial tensions in the United States were rising and the recent incident of a noose found hanging at Duke made the fear of ghoul discrimination ever present.

For those unfamiliar with "Tokyo Ghoul," it is a story following Ken Kaneki, a college student that underwent surgery that transformed him into a half-ghoul. He lives in a world filled with ghouls who live in secret among humans and eat their flesh for sustainance. Ghouls are stronger and faster than regular humans and have sharper senses with the ability to regenerate quickly. There also exist half-ghouls or hybrids that have implanted ghoul organs, like Kaneki and those born from human-ghoul mating. Both kinds are stronger than ghouls and some have received training from government programs to fight the ghoul threat.

"Tokyo Ghoul" is a franchise featuring an ongoing seinen manga and light-novels. Adapted from these is the ongoing anime series, two OVA's and a video game. The third season is set to air during winter 2016.
