The Wiregrass Math, Science and Technology Leadership Academy is slated to start this week in Adams Hall, which is located at Troy University's Dothan Campus. About 40 teachers will receive support and free training during the event.

The Academy intends to provide quality professional advancement for the faculty members in key areas including technology, science and maths. Sponsored by TROY and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, the Academy is in its sixth year.

The Academy features an array of useful workshops that encompass elementary as well as secondary education teachers from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m (June 2-3 and June 6 - 8), Trojan News Center reported.

Those participating will not only have access to follow-up meetings, but will also be able to contact support from the Academy all through the year. Aside from advance teaching methods and STEM-focused lesson plans taught during the course of workshops, faculty members are also given educational technology supplies that will come in handy not only during the school year but also after that.

During the program and follow-up days, participants will be given breakfast and refreshments. The participation is absolutely free - the substitute pay will be covered by the grant. Nationally acclaimed scholars are slated to give presentation during the program, Troy University reported.

The Science and Math faculty members are slated to get $400 worth of teaching support. But that's not all, the academy is trying to adjust any other teaching aids that the faculty members may request for.

A federal grant has partly funded the project under "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) [P.L. 107-110, Title II, Part A/Subpart 3] executed by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. While 77 percent ($55,000) of the project cost is backed with federal funds, non-federal sources financed 23 percent ($16,500).

Out of 40 budgeted slots, some are already booked.
