New-gen consoles offer console gamers varying solutions in specs, hardware, storage, dimensions, and price to name a few. Moreover, Microsoft may finally have a chance to stay on top for the first time with the upcoming killer console Project Scorpio to unseat current leader PS4.

Project Scorpio, Nintendo Switch, PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox One S are the new-gen consoles to enliven and revive the console gaming market dominated by mobile. A look into specs, under the hood and other vital information, reveal what the current trends are and where the industry is headed in terms of new innovations and feature, GameSpot reported.

In CPU power, all new-gen consoles use the AMD 8-core custom CPU except for the Nintendo Switch with a NVIDIA custom Tegra SoC onboard. In CPU clock speeds, the Project Scorpio leads at 2.3GHz followed by the PS4 Pro at 2.1GHz. The Xbox One and Xbox One S are tied at 1.75GHz while the PS4 Slim and PS4 are at 1.6GHz. The Switch trails behind at 1020MHz.

In the GPU side, all new-gen consoles feature the integrated AMD graphics cards except for Switch with a custom NVIDIA GPU. Project Scorpio is set to run at 6 teraflops in performance, unmatched by the 4.2 teraflops of the PS4 Pro. Xbox One S clocked the lowest at 914MHZ.

In memory, the Xbox One and Xbox One S still has the DDR3 memory with 8GB while all the rest of the new-gen consoles feature the GDDR5 memory. Project Scorpio has a whopping 12GB while the PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, and PS4 have only 8GB each. The Nintendo Switch only has 4GB of RAM.

The 500GB storage is standard for all new-gen consoles excepting the Switch. The Xbox One S and PS4 have the 1TB and 2 TB hard drive options. PS4 Pro only has the 1TB model while Switch starts at 32GB, but it is expandable via a microSD card slot.

In terms of new dimensions and weight, the Xbox One is the biggest and heaviest at 13.1x10.8x3.0 and 7.8 lbs. It is followed by the PS4 Pro at 12.8x11.6x2.1 and 7.2 lbs. The Switch is the smallest among the new-gen consoles with 4x6.8x.21 in. or 4x9.4x.54 with the Joy-Con controllers attached. Meanwhile, there are no details yet on the Project Scorpio.

Optical drivers on the new-gen consoles feature the HDR Blu-ray drivers for the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio. The others have the Blu-ray/DVD. Moreover, 4K is supported in the Project Scorpio and also in the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S, but only in video playback.

The Nintendo Switch is the latest to be released last month while the Project Scorpio is set for a holiday 2107 release. In terms of prices, the Project Scorpio is still undisclosed but it is expected to be premium. Some of the new-gen consoles have adjusted their prices in anticipation of the newest addition later this year.

The Xbox One is now only $249 from $499.99 when launched while the Xbox One S is at $299.99. The PS4 has a $50 price drop, now only at $349 while the PS4 Pro is at $399.99 and the PS4 Slim is at $299.99. The Switch currently retails for $299.99.

The specs race is clearly dominated by the upcoming Project Scorpio. Microsoft is hoping to lead the console sales this year with its latest console to beat current sales leader, the PS4. However, Sony still has the benefit of its exclusive titles and PlayStation first deals that Microsoft may not be able to match, Value Walk reported.
