"Shadowhunters" has been renewed for a second season and things are looking intense in the Shadow World. Jace Wayland has joined his father, Valentine, as they wage war against The Clave. Showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer dished details on the changes that are coming in "Shadowhunters" Season 2.

Slavkin and Swimmer are taking over "Shadowhunters" Season 2 after Ed Decter's exit in August. The duo, whose credits include "Smallville" and "Guilt," are bringing something new to the table this season.

"From a writing standpoint, we felt like there could be more depth in the show. We felt like the characters could have more depth and there could be a more resonant emotionality in the show," the showrunners tells Empire. They explained that whereas the first season of the show moved along "very, very quickly," the second outing would slow down a bit to give characters their defining moments and show their back stories.

Matt Hastings has been tapped to do the visuals for "Shadowhunters" Season 2. He's worked on the vampire-themed show "The Originals." Slavkin and Swimmer suggested that the show could go darker, and the action "could be more powerful and more visceral."

The realm of "Shadowhunters" is going to be extended in the new season, as new portals opening up and new characters making their debut. TVLine reported that the Seelie Queen is going to make her highly-awaited appearance.

One of the most interesting relationships that developed in "Shadowhunters" Season 1 was that of Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) and Magnus Bane (Harry Shum, Jr.). This coupling gave rise to what is known in the fan community as Malec. There will definitely be more Malec in "Shadowhunters" Season 2, but their relationship will go through a bit of a restart.

"We realized in season two we needed to start from the beginning, because they have this kiss at a wedding ... It's almost like 'The Graduate.' Now it's, like, 'Well, now what?'" Slavkin and Swimmer explained.

Moreover, Slavkin and Swimmer revealed that the show will deviate a bit from the original Cassandra Clare novels from which it is based.

 "Shadowhunters" Season 2 will premiere on Freeform on Jan. 2, 2017.
