Sony’s PlayStation VR Release Date, News: The First Real Mass-Market Virtual Reality Headset, Available On October 13 For $399 [VIDEO]

Sony's PlayStation VR sets up a new stage of the mass-market appeal of virtual reality. The VR headset might not look fashionably impressive, but it's lighter and more attractive compared to its competitors like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.

The PlayStation VR is not cheap as it is priced at $400, but the device is still less expensive than its competitors and it doesn't require a high-end PC to work if a person already has a PlayStation 4, according to The Washington Post.

Sony's PlayStation VR headset will be available on October 13 for its PlayStation 4 games console, and the headset is already garnering rave reviews, where some of them have called the device as the first-gen virtual reality headset to beat.

However, Sony Senior Research Engineer Dr. Richard Marks, who has been with Sony for 17 years, and played a vital role in Sony's EyeToy and PlayStation Move motion controllers. Marks offered a high-level overview of how the VR headset works, and what drove the tech company to make certain choices regarding the device, TIME reported.

Marks stated that there are two basic things in Sony's PlayStation VR headset, the panel and the lenses. Those are the two major stuffs that affect visual quality.

Marks also said that Apple Inc. has popularized the retinal display, which is the idea that a person can't see the pixels on an electronic screen. But, if people are going to blow them up into a huge field of view, like a person looking at a giant TV, suddenly that person can see the pixels again for the reason that they're so big.

Anyway, when Sony will launch its virtual reality headset next week, gamers can live their childhood fantasy of sporting the cape and cowl of the legendary superhero in "Batman: Arkham VR," based on the report of NY Times.
