NJ Troubled Teen Drops Restraining Order against Ex-Boyfriend (UPDATE)

Rachel Canning, the 18-year-old teenager who sued her parents for college costs, and her ex-boyfriend Lucas Kitzmiller have decided to dismiss mutual domestic violence restraining orders.

"Canning and Kitzmiller independently reached the conclusion that they should enter their college years without having to worry about the possible consequences of having restraining orders on their respective records and that the actions that led to the filing of the complaints did not rise to the level of domestic violence," attorney Steven A. Caputo, who represented Kitzmiller, said, USA Today reports.

"They agreed to the dismissal and confirmed for the court that they were making the decision freely and without coercion or duress. They leave for their respective colleges shortly."

In July, Canning acquired a temporary restraining order against Kitzmiller after he allegedly choked her with his hands during a disagreement on the street, last month.

Sean Canning, Rachel's father and former Lincoln Park Police Chief, said that his daughter then filed a complaint with the Denville Police Department. Kitzmiller also obtained a restraining order against Canning.

Both the parties reached the agreement before the scheduled hearing on Wednesday.

Canning and Kitzmiller began dating while attending Morris Catholic High School. When her parents did not approve of the relationship, the Lincoln Park teenager moved out of the house.

Canning gained international attention when she filed a lawsuit against her parents for child support, private school tuition and payment of her college tuition. Replying to the lawsuit, her parents said that Canning refused to follow household rules and voluntarily left the house.

In March, Canning withdrew the lawsuit and moved back into the house within a few weeks. Canning will attend biomedical engineering program at the Western New England University, this fall, with a $56,000 scholarship.
