Miami Dolphins' defensive back Don Jones is temporarily suspended following his inappropriate tweets about Michael Sam, the first openly gay professional football player.

He will be undergoing sensitivity training.

Jones, 23,  mentioned the word "horrible" in his tweets after images of Sam celebrating his selection (by the St. Louis Rams) with his boyfriend went viral Saturday.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said that the comments are not in compliance with the values and standards of their program and such statements will not be accepted.

"I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media," Jones said. "I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment.....I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization...," USA Today reports.

The 24-year-old athlete's selection was cheered across the country. President Barack Obama too commended him.

"From the playing field to the board room, LGBT Americans prove every day that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are," said Obama,NY Daily News reports.

Despite being a four-year standout on the school's football team and the Southeastern Conference's Defensive Player of the Year last season, Sam was drafted pretty late shocking the entire athletic community.

Sam was the 249th selection (seventh round) out of 256 contenders. His delayed pick was attributed to his personality. Pro scouts deemed Sam a "tweener" meaning he was too small to play a defensive line position and not fast enough to play linebacker.

"From last season alone, I should've been in the first three rounds," Sam said. "They saw Michael Sam, day after day they scratched it off the board. That was their loss. But St. Louis kept me on the board."

Sam celebrated his NFL draft selection at Tao nightclub, Las Vegas, with his recently revealed boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, 23-year-old fellow University of Missouri alum who was part of the school's swim team.

"....Could not be more proud of my babe," Cammisano tweeted.

The couple has been dating for several months. Cammisano's aunt, Cathy Nigro, said that the whole family is proud of the couple and that Sam is a "great athlete."
