Yale Men's Basketball team has a new captain. Makai Mason will be leading the team for this academic year 2017-2018.

Last season, Mason was not able to play for Yale University because of a freak foot injury. He got injured during a preseason exhibition game. He planted his left foot to jump during last November's exhibition bout with Boston University and dislocated his toe, leading to a broken sesamoid bone in the ball of his foot and a torn plantar plate.

New Haven Register reported that Makai Mason was elected as Yale's captain for this academic year regardless of his missing out on last season's games. He was voted by the Bulldogs' returning players at the team's annual banquet last week.

He said that he is honored to be elected as captain and to lead his team along with the other seniors. He also expressed his excitement as they face the next year and added that he sees more value to this opportunity after he was not able to play for last season.

In his previous two seasons, he did accomplish a lot. This includes a 31-point outburst in Yale's NCAA tournament upset of Baylor back in 2015. He also offered encouragement or advice to his teammates in the past season.

Mason will be taking over as team captain for graduating Anthony Dallier. He said that he still tried to be around regardless of his injury and got up shots with people whenever he could.

He added that his main goal in his new role is to keep everybody on the team involved. He wants his team to get engaged and making them contribute.

Speaking to SportzEdge.com, Mason said that he has become even more passionate for the game. He was the fourth sophomore in school history to earn first team All-Ivy recognition. He also finished fifth in the Ivy League in scoring (16.0 ppg.), third in assists (3.8 per game), sixth in free throw percentage (.806) and third in minutes played (32.7 per game).
