Nintendo's latest gaming system, Nintendo Switch, is the subject right now in the gaming universe. Sony and Microsoft, on the other hand, are also gearing up for next-gen devices of their own. Recently surfaced reports are claiming that the next major PlayStation refresh might roll out sooner than anticipated.

Sony is yet to announce the details of its highly anticipated PlayStation 5. But, considering that Microsoft's Xbox Project Scorpio is on the way and Nintendo's Switch has brought enthusiasm in the gaming world, it wouldn't be surprising if Sony will release the PS5 in stores sooner than expected. After all, the Japanese tech giant released last year a mild PlayStation update with the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, BGR reported.

Sony launched the PlayStation 4 just before the holiday season in 2013. Three years later, PlayStation 4 was updated with the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim versions. Although sales of the consoles are still going strong, nonetheless, it appears that Sony is already planning to replace the updated versions with the PS5 as soon as 2018.

The year 2018 marks the fifth year of the PlayStation 4 in the market, which is beyond the half of a gaming system's usual life cycle. There are six or seven years in between the releases of the tech company's major consoles that should mean that the current-gen should by then still have a year before a new console takes over, Value Walk reported.

In spite of that, there is no information yet regarding the specs of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5. But at this point, the PS5 is anticipated to feature an upgraded processor and GPU, with bigger and faster memory. Considering the handling of 4K resolution of the PS4 Pro is still far from perfect, the PlayStation 5 will be able to lift that up with true 4K gaming as well as more stable frame rates.
