Ivanka Trump joined Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the event held at Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum on Tuesday, highlighting the significance of women in the STEM or science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The said event which was held for local school kids was entitled "Getting Excited About STEM".

The program was a collaboration of the Department of Education and NASA in celebration of the Women's History Month, US News reported. This aims to boost and encourage more female students who are interested in STEM.

According to the Department of Education's official website, the goal was to emphasize how important STEM education is. They also discussed and empowered women who want to pursue careers in these fields and was attended by local students from schools in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

NASA astronaut Kay Hire did a talk and students were invited to visit discovery stations where they get to learn more about the things that an astronaut does while in orbit, the impact of black holes on our solar system and they were also able to see rocks that were brought back from the moon.

Trump and Devos, together with Smithsonian's John and Adriennes Mars Director Jack Dailey and student educator Rae Stewart, have shared personal stories and speeches to encourage young female students to explore and pursue careers in STEM.

Trump told the students that the participation of women in STEM fields is very crucial when it comes to battling wage equality, and that it is also important to empower women in the economy. She also urges young boys to be supportive and encouraging to their female classmates, saying that the only way to achieve the same level in the playing field is by working together to eliminate barriers.
