Sinclair Community College has approved adjustments to increase some student and course fees in order to bring in around $1.6 million more in revenue for the college. The board of trustees voted on Tuesday to raise the fees, effective immediately.

Sinclair Community College spokesman Adam Murka said th36at the school will raise its auxiliary fee from $50 to $85. It includes parking, career services and student club fees. The auxiliary fee will bring in around $3 million compared to the $1.8 million that it currently generates.

They plan to use the added money to help invest in parking in the coming years. The community college has 18,400 students and 3,200 employees.

Jeff Boudouris, senior vice president and CFO of Sinclair Community College said periodically, every five years, they do a review and detailed assessment of the fees. That led to the decision to raise fees. The board of trustees did not take increasing fees lightly since they take pride on being able to offer more affodable education. Murka added that they know every nickel counts.

The Biz Journals reported that Sinclair will also raise fees of around 690 of its 1,565 courses. It will generate around $1 million more in course fees to recover the added costs for the classes.

The new adjustments will take effect starting with summer registrations. The trustees have also agreed to eliminate some course fees or move some of the fees down. It will result in another $400,000 a year in course fees and the number of courses that charge extra will be reduced by 156.

Boudouris said the added revenue will be will be used in very specific and goal oriented initiatives for math and other programs. It will focus on intervention opportunities to help students with coursework.

The Dayton Daily News reported that they charge over $99 per class credit hour. After grants, scholarships and other financial aid, the average student pays around $811 to take classes.
