There are only two seasons of "Game of Thrones" left, but for a while now HBO execs have been exploring the possibility of doing a spinoff series. This was confirmed by HBO head of programming Casey Bloys, saying it would be foolish if the cable network giant didn't consider the possibility.

"Game of Thrones" co-creator David Benioff also believes the idea is strong and doable, but hints that it's unlikely he will have any involvement in any potential spinoff. "We all had dinner last night, and we were all saying we should go do different things," Benioff said, as quoted by BuzzFeed. "The characters who maybe will survive--there's always going to be this temptation to keep doing it... to do the spinoff show or do the sequel show and everything. And I think HBO might well do one."

Benioff suggested, however, that instead of utilizing the characters from the original "Game of Thrones" show, it would be better if the spinoff focused on new characters and set in a new environment.

He added that George R.R. Martin built a world with so many characters with "rich, detailed history" behind it.

It was previously said that the "Game of Thrones" spinoff would be a prequel. Bloys said doing a prequel would put them under less pressure.

Some fans agree that the best source material for a prequel would be Martin's "Dunk and Egg" series, which is set approximately 90 years before the events in "Game of Thrones." It tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who would later become King Aegon V Targaryen.

Even Martin himself agrees to the suggestion. "The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk & Egg stories," Martin said, as quoted by EW. "Each of the novellas could easily be done as a two-hour stand-alone movie for television; that would probably be the ideal way to do them, rather than as an ongoing weekly series."

The "Dunk and Egg" series already has three books so far, and Martin says there are more to come. The story is said to have a lighter tone compared to the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.
