When "Gotham" Season 3 returns for its midseason premiere this month, fans will see another iconic Batman villain coming to life. "The Purge: Election Year" actor Raymond J. Barry will portray the temple Shaman.

Shaman is described as "a mysterious figure who enters Bruce's (David Mazouz) life with the stated intention of unlocking the potential of his own mind," Deadline reported. Shaman believes that "the fate of Gotham depends upon Bruce becoming the man the city needs him to become," but the truth behind Shaman's intent "proves to be far more sinister."

The description seems to hint about Shaman being the legendary Ra's Al Ghul, according to Comicbook.com. Shaman initially started as Bruce's mentor in the comics, but eventually became a villain at odds with the Caped Crusader. It remains to be seen whether or not Barry's character would become Ra's Al Ghul on "Gotham."

Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), meanwhile, will pursue a vengeful path in the remaining episodes of "Gotham" Season 3. Promotional photos over on TV Fanatic shows a serious Nygma coming face-to-face with his best friend, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), who looks terrified.

Penguin killed Nygma's lady love, Isabella (Chelsea Spack), out of jealousy. The mayor of Gotham City doesn't want to share his best pal with another person, and so he orchestrated Isabella's death and proceeded to keep it a secret from Nygma.

The latter still knew about the villain's deed, though, with Barbara (Erin Richards) confirming that Penguin was indeed Isabella's killer. Armed with this knowledge, Nygma teams up with Barbara to destroy Penguin.

Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) is coming back to life on "Gotham" after dying in Theo's (James Frain) hands in Season 2. There are theories that Jerome will become the Joker on "Gotham," with Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong) said to be responsible for bringing the villain back to life.

"Gotham" executive producer John Stephens said that they have always planned "to bring Jerome back," Zap2it reported. This year, they are "basically extending the idea of the cult of Jerome" and "building the architecture for him to come back." Check out Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins standing over Jerome's bloody corpse below.

"Gotham" Season 3 returns for episode 12 titled "Ghosts" on Monday, Jan. 16 at 8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT on FOX. Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) life gets endangered after Falcone (John Doman) places a hit on him for shooting Mario (James Carpinello). Bruce and Selina (Camren Bicondova), meanwhile, grapple with the return of the latter's mom, SpoilerTV reported.
