On Monday, January 9, the University of Michigan has recently announced that the university's academic medical center is going to have a new name. It is now called the Michigan Medicine.

Michigan Medicine features the organizational changes of the department as well. Marschall S. Runge, M.D, is the newly appointed leader for both the U-M Medical School and Medical Affairs. He will singularly lead in the combined roles.

The change also reflects the academic medical center's three part mission, as reported by Michigan Live. The core missions are patient care, medical education and health care research. The new name, Michigan Medicine, was unveiled on Monday and has already taken effect.

Aside from the change of name and Runge's leadership, there are also two additional management positions and additional responsibilities for Runge. Runge is not only the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, he also serves as the Dean of the U-M Medical School and the Chief Executive Officer for Michigan Medicine.

The U-M Board of Regents is excited to put Runge in charge of both hospital operations and the medical school. In this manner, there would be increased collaboration for both sides when it comes to patient care, academics and research.

According to Runge, it is not just a change of name, as reported by Michigan Daily. For the staff, it indicates a growing trend in world-class academic medical centers. The name features their missions. Runge expects that Michigan Medicine is going to help generate a better understanding of the institution's strength as a medical and academic center. He also hopes that this will invigorate the faculty, students and staff.

What does this mean for the patients? Patients, according to Runge, will receive better care as Michigan Medicine operations with minimal operational redundancies. They will find that there is a better collaboration between both the school and the hospital.
