As a parent, one of the most important things you should be looking into is how to raise your children to be independent adults.

According to Business Insider, Dr. Tovah Klein, director of the Barnard Center for Toddler Development and the author of "How Toddlers Thrive," defines independence as a slow and gradual process that takes time. He said that it begins when toddlers learn how to stand on their own feet and move on their own.

To be a parent is not a walk in the park but here are a few helpful tips for parents to raise independent kids.

Teach them daily routines

It helps when children are aware of how things are going to happen so that they feel they are somehow given a sense of control. They can be given certain routines throughout the day so that they can keep moving forward. This way, they will slowly feel and become independent.

Allow them to make small decisions

As toddlers, they cannot really make big decisions but you can give them the chance to make some options no matter how small they are. Letting them make decisions with their own ideas is a part of becoming independent.

Acknowledge an accomplishment

When you assign your child a specific task, don't forget to give them a pat on the back for completing it, according to the Huffington Post. It is important for children to feel their efforts are recognized no matter how small they are.

Allow them to help themselves

There will come a time when you have to let them learn and do things on their own without your help, unless they have already done everything to do a task. This is how they will learn to figure things out on their own which is an important step to independence.
