Samuel See, a 34-year-old Yale University professor of English and American studies, was found dead in a New Haven, Conn. jail last Sunday. See was arrested on charges of violating a protective order, and threatening and interfering with police officers.

New Haven police said that See was found unresponsive at about 6:00 a.m. in his cell at Union Avenue detention facility on Sunday and was later pronounced dead. The medical examiner's office has yet to determine the cause of his death. Meanwhile, police and court officials have initiated an investigation into the professor's death, Reading Eagle reports.

Soon after his arrest, See was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries (a cut above his eye) related to a domestic dispute with his partner. The police are not sure of what caused the injury.

The dispute ensued when See's partner, Saunder Ganglani, showed up at their previous shared home to recover some of his belongings. Police said that they received a complaint of a domestic dispute shortly after 5:00 p.m., Saturday. When police arrived at the house, See was angered on learning that his partner had a protective order against him.

Screaming at the police that it was his house, See claimed that he cannot be arrested. When police were trying to handcuff him, he resisted the arrest.

"As See was led to a police car, he yelled to one of the arresting officers, 'I will kill you ... I will destroy you,'" a New Haven police spokesperson said, Business Insider reports.

The university officials said that See was on leave from Yale. Yale said that the campus community is extremely hurt to learn of See's death.

"Our condolences go out to his family, faculty colleagues, and students, and his friends at Yale and elsewhere," Yale told the Guardian.
