If your computer is running slow than usual or is getting many pop-ups lately, chances are malware, spyware, or a virus has infected your machine.

Having an anti-malware or an anti-virus program installed is not a guarantee for protection, especially if you do not update its virus definition files, according to PCWorld. Exploit kits are the usual delivery methods used by malware that penetrate computers looking for system weaknesses.

1] Make it a habit of updating the operating system, browsers, and its plugins of your PC - never delay updates and patches if they are available. These are usually sent you once vulnerabilities are detected, according to Microsoft.

2] Enable click-to-play plugins - Malicious ads are delivered by exploit kits to your PC without you having to click on the ad itself. You can block the exploit by enabling click-to-play from your browser.

3] Delete unwanted or unused software including legacy programs - Discontinued software are major risks for online attack. If you are no longer using them, uninstall them.

4] Be careful with reading emails - Hover over links in an email before clicking. If the address is legit then proceed, if not, stop and leave. When in doubt, better not click the link.

5] Be wary of fake tech support numbers - these usually arrives in pop-ups from bogus companies offering help with your malware problem. Legitimate companies will not market their products and services through a pop-up.

6] Avoid cold callers like the plague - these fool you the old fashioned way by calling you on your phone pretending to be somebody or representing a company. Be careful with them especially if they ask security questions.

7] Use strong passwords and/or password managers - make it a habit to change passwords regularly and never write it down and forget about it. If you have trouble remembering passwords, use Password managers to do the work for you.

8] Always, check if you are on a secure connection - That padlock at the left of the URL is your cue you are in a safe zone. Make sure sites you visit have URLs that are https, not just http.

9] Always log-off websites when you are done - Always log off your online account especially when using public PCs. Anyone with tech savvy might be able to steal your login information.

10] Firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-exploit are your friends - It is not enough you have them. Make sure too that they are updated with the latest VDF's

It is always best to keep these in mind. Being aware will help you keep you protected from outsiders and your own mistakes.
