There have been past rumblings about CBS working on a spinoff for its hit sitcom "How I Met Your Mother." Years after the show's final episode aired, the rumors never came into fruition. As they say, good things come to those who wait, especially for die-hard "HIMYM" fans. The show's creators are reportedly reviving spinoff plans for the show.

The whole concept of the "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff, which is temporarily titled "How I Met Your Father," is being ordered for a rewrite from "This Is Us" co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, E! News reports. "HIMYM" executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are attached to the project as EPs.

The pilot episode, conveniently titled "How I Met Your Father," will be told from a female point of view. According to Deadline, the upcoming series has a whole new premise and revolves around new characters. It's not the kind of spinoff fans will expect since it will not have any connection to the original "How I Met Your Mother." The only similarity between both shows is that it subscribes to the same storytelling device, which is having one parent (this time the mother) telling the story of how she met her spouse to the kids.

As of this point, it is not clear when the "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff series will take off and begin production. The sitcom will not automatically go to CBS, since a lot of other networks are reportedly interested in it. For now, a spec script is being developed internally at 20th TV.

In 2014, Bays and Thomas worked with "Saturday Night Live's" Emily Spivey to create a pilot for a show called "How I Met Your Dad." The pilot didn't get picked up and the idea was left to collect dust. It featured Greta Gerwig in the lead role and Meg Ryan took the part of the narrator.

Although the same storytelling device would be the same, "How I Met Your Father" still leaves fans curious about what's to come in the series. Plus, the fact that "This Is Us" writers are helming the story, it is safe to say that fans can expect a lot of heart-tugging moments between the characters in the series.

"How I Met Your Mother" starred Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel. It ran with nine episodes from 2005 to 2014. The show largely appealed younger audiences and became the first TV comedy series to have a solid following online through social media.
