Sources have indicated that season 3 of "Rick and Morty" has already been written and rumors have circulated regarding a possible release date.

Show writer Erica Rosbe said that they ended four weeks ago. She went on saying that in a week or two they might have screenings in the production office.

Since season 2 of "Rick and Morty" ended in October last year, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment. Season 3 writers and producers have commented that all the writing has been finished. However, the show is still being animated.

The animation department is holding up production of season 3. Co-creator Dan Harmon has said that the entire team of animators take their work incredibly seriously. The show earned a stellar reputation among fans. Not surprising as it features high quality production value.

The animation process was made even more difficult because the show uses an unorthodox method. "Rick and Morty" animators work around almost entirely ad-libbed dialogue. All the mumbling and stuttering heard in the program makes for great comedy but is hard on the animators. They have to include those with complete facial expressions, Cinema Blend reported.

Fans remember Mr. Poopybutthole saying "a year and a half" in season 2's finale, which makes the projected release date 2017. However, as previously stated by the writers, production could be ahead of schedule making a December airing plausible.

Rumors have circulated pointing to a December 2 release date. However, neither Harmon nor Justin Roiland, the show's creators, has confirmed it. Adult Swim has also been silent regarding the topic.

The first season of the show premiered on Dec. 2, 2013. This is probably the reason rumors indicated that date, Ecumenical News reported.

For the moment, fans will have to make due with the series' previews and claymation shorts. A lot of which can be found all over the internet.
