A Pennsylvania university student has been charged with attempted murder after admitting that he put bleach in his pregnant girlfriend's water bottle - in an attempt to cause harm to her unborn baby.

Theophilous Washington, a 20-year-old student from Millersville University in Pennsylvania, has been charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder of an unborn child, reports the Associated Press. He was also charged with reckless endangering.

Washington's girlfriend, an unnamed freshman, was with him the night prior to the incident. According to the district attorney's office, the two were together Thursday evening through Friday morning. When the woman was about to leave, Washington asked her to get him a bottle of water from the refrigerator.

Washington took a sip but then asked for juice instead, reports the Lancaster Online. He offered the water bottle to his girlfriend, who took it with her as she returned to her on-campus room.

After drinking some water, however, the woman started to feel a burning sensation in her throat and tried to vomit what she had ingested. She sought for help and decided to call 911. A responding doctor examined the woman and said that she and her 2-month-old baby are in no danger and appear unharmed.

Police interviewed Washington, who admitted to putting bleach in the water bottle he offered to the woman. He said he poured a cap-full of bleach into the water bottle he gave to his girlfriend, in the hopes of killing the baby.

"Washington, the father of the child, admitted to putting bleach in the water bottle," prosecutors said. Washington told police he didn't want to harm his girlfriend, just the baby. An investigation inside Washington's room yielded a gallon-sized bottle of bleach.

Washington will have his preliminary hearing on Nov. 4, and remains in Lancaster County Prison on $1 million bail.
