Failure, at the time that it happens, may seem like the end of the world. At first, it would feel that nothing would ever go right. However, cliché as it might be, disappointments are truly a part of one's journey to success.

TIME collated a list of 10 creative geniuses who were able to rise above their personal struggles. Their stories are proof that failure can be a stepping stone to success.

1. Vincent Van Gogh

Nowadays, his paintings are worth millions. Unfortunately, though, during his lifetime, Van Gogh was ignored. He died without recognition or fame and was only able to sell one painting.

2. Claude Monet

Another famous painter, also known as the Father of Impressionism, was not only unappreciated during his lifetime. Monet was ridiculed in public and was even excluded from the prestigious Paris Salon for his painting style.

3. Ludwig van Beethoven

This classical music composer was once deemed as "hopeless" by his teacher. Now, his famous songs are being widely appreciated by music lovers everywhere.

4. The Beatles

Before they soared in their popularity, The Beatles had a difficult time signing with a label. They were turned down by Decca Records because, apparently, their sound was "on the way out."

5. Dr. Seuss

Theodor Geisel had to endure several rejections from publishers. His first manuscript was rejected 28 times.

6. Stephen King

One of his most famous works, "Carrie," was rejected 30 times. King decided to throw it away but, fortunately, his wife was able to retrieve it. The author also suffers from anxiety and depression.

7. J.K. Rowling

While writing her legendary series, J.K. Rowling was struggling with being a single mom and making ends meet. Recently, Telegraph reported that she will be lending her personal "Harry Potter" archive to the British Library.

8. Vera Wang

She once aspired to be an ice skater and even tried out for the Olympic figure-skating team back in 1968. Things did not work out and she pursued a career in publishing as an editor in Vogue. Wang was passed over for the editor-in-chief position and eventually found her niche as one of the top-tier wedding dress designers.

9. Jay Z

Born Shawn Carter in the projects in Brooklyn, the rapper-entrepreneur started out his music career by selling tracks out of the trunk of his car.

10. Lady Gaga

Stefani Germanotta pursued her music career after she dropped out of school. Her journey was filled with rejections and dropped contracts.
