Looks like Samsung's next-gen version of the flagship Galaxy S7 smartphone - which is alternatively up for grabs in a curved model i.e. the Galaxy S7 edge - is likely to get rid of the flat screen option for the sake of the curved variant.

Unlike its predecessors, the Galaxy S8 will come up with one variant and not two, if rumors doing rounds are anything to go by. Apparently, the South Korean tech firm plans to stick to the dual-edge screen as far as its Galaxy S smartphone lineup is concerned. This piece of information comes directly from chief Dong-jin Koh, who divulged the details at a media interview in New York.

Dong-jin Koh noted that Samsung has considered making the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup, provided the company give consumers differentiated user experience via software and a slew of user-friendly functions for the curved screen, The Korea Herald reported.

While this does not compulsorily imply that the company will actually refrain from manufacturing the regular model, the fact that Samsung is considering the option raises the possibility, especially considering latest developments.

Samsung is self sufficient when it comes to manufacturing adequate curved display panels without facing major challenges. Moreover, the company is banking on differentiating itself from competitors, so this move may give it a discrete identification, TechTimes reported.

Since Samsung is gearing up to debut its 2016 flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 7 only in a dual curved variant, this can be considered as a litmus test for the world's largest smartphone maker as far as its future display plans are concerned. The Note 7 doesn't even sport the word "edge" attached to its name. This also clearly hints the direction the company may be moving in.

According to a market watcher, Samsung will probably not dump the flat-screen Galaxy S smartphone right off the bat, however if the Note 7 is well-received, it would serve as a cue for the company to concentrate only on the edge model.

Aside from added functionality, the curved screens also offer a better grip on the phone, contrary to the angular edges of flat screen smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is likely to hit the store shelves in UK on February 26 2017.
