Google took the wraps off its much-awaited operating system, which will be officially dubbed as Android Nougat earlier this week. As speculated, the OS will first make an appearance on the Nexus 2016 flagship, the alleged specs of which have recently surfaced online.

However, the search engine giant continues to remain mum regarding the device's release date.

Amidst rumor mills swirling a slew of speculations around Google's next OS, even going as far as calling it Nutella, Google unveiled the highly-anticipated sequel to Android M (Marshmallow) and its dubbed Android Nougat.

A short video clip that debuted along with the new OS, explains how the new Android name was picked out, Yibada reported.

Google took to its Twitter handle to give fans a sneak peek of the Nougat mascot, which is basically the official Android statue, only surrounded Nougat candy bars on all sides.

Android Nougat will reportedly reach its last developer/beta build by end of July.

This has sparked speculations hinting that the final cut is slated to make an appearance sometime in August. Google however has opted to remain mum and has neither accepted nor denied these rumors.

Google has adopted the same approach as far as the next Nexus is concerned. Leaked specs of the purported device have continued to surface online. The latest leak in this series comes courtesy of Android Police.

Citing unnamed sources as providers of the latest updates, the tech blog site claim the two rumored Android phones are shaping up to be apt sequels to the existing Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.

If these speculations are anything to go by, the upcoming Nexus Marlin will be built by HTC.

The purported device will reportedly be phablet-size featuring a 5.5-inch screen, paired with an AMOLED display panel in 2K resolution (2560 x 1440).

It will be powered by an unidentified quad-core Qualcomm processor. Rumors are rampant that for the upcoming Nexus flagship, both Google and HTC have opted for the Snapdragon 823 or the updated version of SD 820. Just like Sailfish, speculations hint Marlin will pack 4 GB of RAM as well.

In terms of camera setup, the device will reportedly boast a 12-megapixel rear camera and an impressive 8-megapixel front shooter for the selfie addicts. If rumors proved to be true, Nexus Marlin will be available in two models - 32GB and 128GB editions.

Check out the rumored specs below:

USB-C port
Fingerprint scanner (rear-mounted)
3450mAh battery
Bottom-firing speakers
Bluetooth 4.2

As far as the device's release date is concerned, the report did not divulge any info. However, optimistic fans continue to speculate that the device will be unveiled along with the Android Nougat, which is expected to debut sometime in August this year.
