A recent study revealed that genes can influence the academic performance among students of up to 80 percent.

Students' academic performance is apparently heavily influenced by their genetic code,  Taylor & Francis Group reported.

Many have taken this that there is little can be done to help those students who struggle in school, which implies that spending money on academic assistance is rather useless. But researchers still pointed out that one's genetic makeup is not the whole case.

As the study may suggest, that at the most is that genes can potentially influence one's academic performance of up to 80 percent, but a large part is still based on the environment of which the child is exposed to, specially during development years, as The Conversation reported.

Another study, which corresponds to the result of the recent study, stated an example of the degree of influence between genes, and the environment on the student's performance.

It lays down factors that the genetics have on the performance, as shown with non-identical twins. It has revealed that gender similarities have little difference among the subjects, and that the genetics along with the environment directly results in the same performance, according to the study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

The study was conducted with an emphasis on academic performance on the areas of literacy, and arithmetic. The range of difference of genetic makeup is at 50 percent to 80 percent. The researchers have made use of a standardized test to conduct the study.

While the study showed relatively promising results, the team have yet to cover the areas to gauge the level of performance on the subjects of creativity and technical abilities, as it is closely associated with talent and skill.

Environmental factors among students still show a clear view of the students' academic performance, as some students who exposed to heavy metal contamination have resulted in low NAPLAN scores.
