Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has suspended its basketball player, Glenn Bryant, Wednesday, following his arrest on charges of strangulation and aggravated domestic violence against his 19-year-old girlfriend during an argument between the two on Monday.

The strangulation charge against Bryant is a felony, while the domestic violence charge is a misdemeanor.

Bryant, 22, was arrested Monday afternoon after police responded to an incident in 1000 block of Huron River Drive.

Ypsilanti PD Sgt. Tom Eberts said that the couple had been dating for a year and is reported to argue frequently. On that day, the victim alleges that her boyfriend choked her during the argument.

The university later issued a statement:

 "Following our Student-Athlete Discipline Policy, Bryant will be automatically suspended as the policy states, 'until the charges are dropped, dismissed or otherwise resolved.' In addition, student athletes also are subject to the University's Student Code of Conduct, administered by Eastern's Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards."

Bryant, majoring in criminal justice, began his career with EMU's athletic program in 2011 after he got transferred from the University of Arkansas. He played in the last season and has one year left in the program.

A preliminary examination is scheduled, May 7.

Eastern Michigan University, established in 1849, is a co-educational public university. Currently, EMU comprises of seven colleges and schools - Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Health & Human Services, Technology, an Honors College, and a Graduate School; 800 acres; over 120 buildings and a total enrollment of more than 23,000 students.
